How to Run 8K HDMI Up to 1000 Feet Without Losing Your Mind (or Your Signal)
Please call for installer pricing
If you've ever tried to run HDMI more than about 50 feet, you already know the problem: HDMI just wasn't built for distance. Signal degrades, resolutions drop, and suddenly your beautiful 8K source looks like it's being piped through a potato. The usual fixes — expensive baluns, bulky extenders, complicated fiber terminations — tend to be either underpowered, overpriced, or a nightmare to install.
SCP built a better answer: the 998-DO-EXT 48Gbps HDMI/MPO Dongle Extender Kit, paired with the ultra-bendable SCP-EasyFiber™ cable system. Together, they let you push full 8K HDMI up to 300 meters (1000 feet) over a single run of fiber — and actually enjoy the install process while you're at it.
The Core Kit: 998-DO-EXT
At the heart of the system are two small, lightweight dongles — one at the source, one at the display — connected by SCP-EasyFiber™. Each dongle plugs directly into an HDMI port with SCP's Snug-Tite™ grip, so it won't wiggle loose in the socket over time.
What it supports:
- HDMI 2.1 full feature set, including 48Gbps 8K@60 4:2:0 FRL
- eARC, HFR, VRR, ALLM, QFT, and QMS
- 4K@60 4:4:4 plus HDR+ TMDS
- HDR10+, Dolby Atmos, and DTS-HD Master Audio
- HDCP 2.3 compatibility
It's thinner, lighter, and more flexible than most extenders on the market, with high EMI protection and external power for maximum device compatibility. It's genuinely plug-and-play — no configuration headaches, no separate control software.
In the box: (2) HDMI/MPO dongles, (2) MPO protectors, (2) 5V power cords, a pulling capsule for easy fish-through installs, and an instruction manual.
The Cable That Makes It Work: SCP-EasyFiber™
This is where the system really separates itself from other long-distance HDMI solutions. Instead of stiff, hard-to-route fiber, SCP-EasyFiber™ is laser-optimized OM3 multimode fiber engineered to handle tight bends and awkward cable paths without the signal loss you'd normally expect. That means you can actually route it through real-world walls, ceilings, and rack backs — not just a straight, open conduit.
The system comes in two cable types depending on your install:
EFP-998 Series — Female/Female Channel Cable
The primary point-to-point run between your two 998-DO-EXT dongles. Connects directly female-to-female, dongle to dongle.
- UL OFNP Plenum-rated: 15ft, 25ft, 50ft, 100ft, 200ft, 300ft
- LSZH (Euro B2Ca Class): 5m, 10m, 20m, 50m, 100m
EFP-998MF Series — Male/Female Jumper Cable
Used whenever you're connecting a longer EFP-998 channel run to an MPO keystone jack. This short jumper bridges from the keystone (male end) to the dongle (female end) at the source or display.
- UL OFNP Plenum-rated: 3ft, 6ft, 15ft, 50ft
- LSZH (Euro B2Ca Class): 1m, 2m, 5m, 15m
Building It Into Real Installations
The 998-DO-EXT system isn't just a point-to-point cable — it's a full modular ecosystem, so you can design the install that actually fits your job:
- Direct Point-to-Point Connection — Simplest setup: dongle, EFP-998 channel cable, dongle. Done.
- Rack Connection — Route the channel cable to an unloaded patch panel fitted with the F-KJ-MPO-WT MPO Keystone Jack, then jumper out with EFP-998MF cables on each end.
- Keystone Connection — Terminate at wallplates fitted with MPO keystone jacks on both ends, ideal for clean in-wall runs.
- Coupler Connection — Need to extend or daisy-chain a run? Use the EFP-MPO-COU MPO Coupler (or the SF-WPMPO Waterproof Coupler for outdoor/exposed runs) to join cable segments — all while staying within that 300m/1000ft total channel budget.
All told, whether you're going straight from source to display or building out a full structured cabling run through a patch panel, the total channel + jumper length can stretch all the way to 300 meters / 1000 feet without sacrificing signal integrity.
Where It Shines
This system was built with real-world ProAV work in mind:
- ProAV installs — Long conference room and auditorium runs
- Home theater — Getting 8K from equipment racks to displays without a rat's nest of cable
- Digital signage — Long-distance runs to displays in retail, corporate, and public spaces
The Bottom Line
Long-distance 8K HDMI used to mean compromise — either on cable flexibility, signal quality, or your installer's patience. The SCP 998-DO-EXT Dongle Extender Kit, built around SCP-EasyFiber™, gives you a modular, reliable, cost-effective way to push full-spec 8K HDMI up to 1000 feet, with an install experience that doesn't fight you every step of the way.
